Eggs, Elephants and Easter (The Three Es!)

Spring is upon us! And nothing says spring like elephants. Oh, you disagree? Well, for now let’s put our differences aside and admire what my creative students made this month.

My second grade art class made adorable elephants, using an

art technique called crayon rubbing (or texture rubbing). 

To use this technique, you put a piece of textured cardboard (or anything with texture) under your paper. You color back and forth (crayon works well but marker does not) and the texture is transferred to your paper. I thought the ridges would make for a fun pattern on the elephants’ skin. We made the elephants by cutting out shapes and assembling them as collages on blue construction paper. The elephants are taking showers, and I love how different each one is.

Over the last few weeks my students created Easter-themed art. Usually I don’t do posts with a religious theme, as religion is a personal subject. But I teach at a private school and at Easter we do art with a religious aspect. Here are a few of the crosses my students made. Creating 3-D flowers from paper was an optional touch, and I’m glad that some kids tried it. I asked the kids to use happy spring colors, and I love how much color they used in their art.

Easter eggs are also on the menu this week, drawn by Kindergarteners. It’s fun for kids to come up with patterns on Easter eggs, and I love their drawings of egg-filled baskets.
